About Us
Gemstone’s Poodles is a family-owned, located on three acres of land, where we also raise horses and have a minature donkey. We have been in the business of dog breeding for over twenty years.
In addition to our breeding programs, we are actively involved in animal rescue. We feel strongly that if we are to bring new animals into the world, we should also help to foster and place pets that have been abandoned or relinquished by their owners. We are very proud of the rescue work that we do, and have placed hundreds of pets in new homes – from rehabilitated dogs to guinea pigs.
Christy is responsible for our poodle program on a full-time basis. She is a trained veterinary technician, with ten years experience in an animal hospital. She has also developed expertise in pet nutrition by attending numerous workshops and clinics on the topic. Although our dogs have plenty of outdoor space, they live in our home, along with Christy, our three young children and other pets.
Our indoor dog area is monitored on a twenty-four hour basis via a video camera. In addition to being able to monitor what is happening with all of our dogs at any time that they are kenneled, it also allows us to monitor the progress of our pregnant females who are nearing delivery of their litter. Christy assists with the delivery of every litter, and a veterinarian is on call in case of emergency. Fortunately, we have never had an emergency during the whelping process.
All of our children have participated in the delivery of puppy litters. They have been trained in the care and socialization of our dogs from a very young age. Our puppies are handled from birth, and played with from an appropriate age. Once they reach six to eight weeks old, our puppies are gradually introduced to family friends, our other dogs, and our cats. By the time a puppy is ready to go to their new home, it is healthy, happy, and well-socialized. We take pride in the fact that we are continually complimented on how well-socialized our puppies are when they go to their new homes.
We are always happy to talk with prospective buyers about our dogs, and take calls from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at 860-871-9713.
